Science fiction is a genre that delves into new universes, technologies, and societies. The first book in the New Caelus Series, On the Precipice, written by rising sci-fi author Brianna MacMahon, introduces readers to her carefully crafted universe.
A Universe Born from Dedication
The creation of the New Caelus Series is a testament to MacMahon’s dedication and passion for world-building. The series presents a universe complete with its own unique political system. To build her universe, MacMahon relied on her academic background in history and political science. Her educational path started at Hartwick College and continued at Syracuse University, where she studied political processes in great detail—an experience that now comes to life in her novels.
Character-Driven Narratives
MacMahon emphasizes that On the Precipice is a character-driven story. It boasts an ensemble cast, and readers follow multiple points of view throughout the story. Readers are thus given the opportunity to delve deeper into these characters’ mindsets and motivations. The different points of view help readers contextualize the universe and see that everyone has their own opinion on how Imperium should—and should not—be governed.
“The world-building is deep,” MacMahon shares, “but I’m most proud of my multifaceted characters, all of whom have a unique voice and purpose.”
The Writing Process: A Blend of Discipline and Flexibility
MacMahon’s writing style changes ever so slightly depending on whose point of view she is writing. Though she prides herself on her ability to write believable dialogue and narration, she can sometimes find it difficult to finish—or even start—a scene. Hence, she understands the importance of stepping away to clear her mind. If she feels stuck, she writes what she wants to happen in brackets, then continues writing. Later, when she returns to the scene in question, she is able to pick up where she left off.
A Story Years in the Making
On the Precipice has been a labor of love since 2015, evolving from its original form as a screenplay titled The Things They Made Us Believe. It wasn’t until the creation of the Prophates in 2016 that the story transformed into the book series we see today.
Beyond the Pages
In her free time, MacMahon enjoys reading, hanging out with her family, playing video games, going on long walks, and watching her favorite comfort shows on repeat.
Brianna MacMahon’s journey with the New Caelus Series is a remarkable example of how a writer’s experiences and education can fuse to create a universe that resonates with readers of various backgrounds and ages. Her commitment to character depth and her innovative approach to storytelling make On the Precipice a must-read story.
